What Journalists Have Not Told Us - - -

Much comment has been made on the agreement between the Government and some Religious Orders on the compensation issue.

St. Joseph’s Orthopaedic Hospital in Coole, Co. Westmeath was managed by the Daughters of Charity. The weekly grant was £8 per patient and was not increased for 6 years. This was to include all expenses including staffing, maintenance, care, food etc.

In the early 1970’s the Sisters received £200 per year. The Trustees wished to raise this to £500 but the Department refused. This was a clear case of Government abusing the commitment and dedication of the Sisters.
