Trocaire:

Did you know that Slavery still exists? There are at least 26 million slaves in the world today. Despite the fact that slavery is illegal, many governments are unwilling to enforce the law or to ensure that those who profit from slavery are punished. Trocaire supports local groups and organizations that are working to liberate people in slavery. They also offer a fresh start to people who have been enslaved and they campaign at an international level for an end to all forms of modern slavery.

TROCAIRE:

Slavery is expanding today due to poverty. In 1850, an average agricultural slave in Alabama sold for $1000, around £40,000 in today’s money. A child in India can be sold into bondage for as little as £25 today. The most common form of modern slavery is bonded labour(or debt bondage). people become bonded labourers when they take are tricked into taking a loan for as little as £30 – the cost of medicine for a sick child. To repay the debt they are forced to work long hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year. They are now trapped and continue to be held in bondage long after the original debt has been repaid.

Trocaire

In some situations poor people are lured away from their villages in the hope of finding a better life only to find themselves tricked and enslaved. In Brazil whole families of landless farmers become enslaved in this way. In parts of Africa children as young as seven years are captured and trained to fight as soldiers. In these situations Trocaire is there working on your behalf to bring liberty and a fresh start to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.
