Trocaire has influenced Irish Government policy on the importance of genetic resources for food security in the developing world. In a highly successful campaign, we have raised public awareness of the continuing existence of slavery and contributed to the establishment of an International Labour Organisation (ILO) Special Programme of Action on Forced Labour.

There are more than 27 million people living in slavery today - twice the number of people taken from Africa during the 400-year transatlantic slave trade. The 10 million people who are in debt bondage in India are included in their number, as are the 300,000 child soldiers fighting in 30 countries world-wide. Trocaire

Trocaire is helping to change things. Where there is exploitation, there are good people fighting back. In Sierra Leone Trocaire is supporting a local organisation Caritas Makeni, in its vital work with these children. This project negotiates their release from child slavery and places them in care centres. The project also traces the children’s families and helps them to re-integrate into their community by providing them with education and training. Last year 1000 children were freed.

TROCAIRE

For the last few weeks we have outlined the problems of child labour. More than 300,000 children are forced to fight with armies and militia in over 40 countries. In

Sierra Leone there is more than 6,000 child soldiers. UNICEF estimates that 200,000 children are sold into slavery each year to work at harvesting cocoa and other cash crops.

Where there is corruption there are good people fighting back. as a result of Trócaire’s efforts and your actions, the International Labour Organisation has adopted an international programme against forced labour.
