The IGC, established in 1968, is the professional body representing members in second-level schools, colleges of further education, adult guidance services, non-school settings and private practice. Practitioners fulfil their role through a variety of interventions described in the IGC Role Document.
The institute has a liaison and advocacy role with government departments, management and trade union organisations, national parent bodies, higher and technical education institutions, employment and training agencies, representatives of industry, and a wide range of non-government organisations.
The IGC has a constitution and code of ethics. It promotes standards for entry into the profession and the practice of guidance and counselling in Ireland.
Members' professional development is supported by ongoing in-career training.
