GLEN ROVERS 5-7     BLACKROCK 3-2
Sunday 17th October.
Many changes had taken place since the last Glen victory in 1945.Some of the star players had retired, such as Charlie Tobin and Jack Buckley.Joe Looney, a tough and uncompromising hurler had gone to America and was a severe loss. Jim Young was elected captain for the year. The big day was at hand and Blackrock were seeking their first title since 1931.

In the presence of 25,000 people and amidst scenes of wild enthusiasm Glen Rovers proved themselves to be Cork hurling's greatest fifteen when they defeated Blackrock by double scores. The Rockies' made a gallant fight of it. Every inch was contested gamely and when early in the second half John Quirke reduced the arrears to just a point, the excitement became intense.Spirit and gameness however was of little avail against the experience and guile of a side which would not accept defeat.

The game was a thrilling one from start to finish but the balance of youth and experience on the Glen team carried the day. The Glen backs plus a brilliant display by goalkeeper Dave Creedon repelled the Rockies attacks time and time again. Din Joe Buckley gave one of his most spectacular displays and he was aptly assisted by Paddy O'Donovan and Jim Young. Charlie O'Flaherty gave a polished performance and Jimmy Lynam gave his best display so far since he joined the senior team. But the game will be remembered by the Glen followers because of the performance of two other players. Donie Twomey at full forward did not figure among the scorers but his workrate was superb.Jack Lynch also gave a remarkable performance. The Cork Examiner reported: " Once again, it was a real day out for the veterans. Jack Lynch's display was one that he must seldom have equalled in all of his many Croke Park appearences. This player who was a substitute on the 1934 Glen team which brought the title to Blackpool for the first time won the plaudits of the crowd yesterday by his magnificent performance. He completely dominated play around centre field and he seemed to revel in the difficult ground conditions".

Blackrock contributed in no small way to make this another great day for Cork hurling.Special mention must be made of their renowned veteran John Quirke who had already earned a special place in Cork's hurling history as a member of the 1941 - 1944 teams.
