So who am I and why do I have a Homepage?
To answer the first question I'm a 4th year Information
Technology student studying in N.U.I, Galway.
My name is David Hernández but people like to call me Dave, probably 'cause
it's easier to say (either that or they can't pronounce my name).
To answer the second question it's fashionable to have a Homepage
these days and since I have absolutely no hope of being fashionable in the other
sense of the word (that's the one with all those good looking people) I thought
I'd be better off gracing my presence in a part of the world where nobody can
see me.
N.B. If you are an employer who happens
to have lots of money to spare ;-) why not have a look at my C.V. Or
download resume.doc or cover.doc.
Why I'm interested in Computer Stuff.
Ever since my family got their first computer back when
I was still learning my times tables I was hooked. It was a BBC Micro and
I was astounded by the power of the thing, I mean with a little bit of patience
( a lot of patience nowadays ) it could do anything. Ok so you couldn't play
Doom or Quake but in those days to an influential kid it was really something
( and it did have space invaders! :-). Even more amazing was the whole concept
of being able to tell it exactly what to do, i.e. program the machine! When
my brother started programming in a strange new language called BASIC I began
to take an interest and eventually got to program myself; only going so far
as some basic 'if' statements ( Alan Turring eat your heart out ).
When the time came to sell the computer we bought a more
modern machine; a Commodore Amiga 500 and life hasn't been the same since.
If I thought the ol' Micro was good this machine was beyond my wildest imagination.
The quality of images and sound were pretty impressive back then and even
now they don't seem too bad. After years of playing games ( Sensi Soccer,
Kick Off, SuperCars, Falcon ...) I got to hear of a programming tool called
AMOS that would allow you to program games with complex arcade sequences and
things. I saved up enough money to send away for and buy the software, but
because I never had any formal training in programming I didn't get any further
than controlling sprites and bobs with a joystick and scrolling text and images
on the screen. Eventually I decided I'd like to make a carear using computers
so that all those long hours in front of a monitor wouldn't be wasted. So
now I'm learning to program in C, C++ and a variety of other languages. To
this day I'm still amazed at the power of the computer and my quest to learn
more about it still goes on ....
So that's the long winded answer as to why I'm interested
in computers. Do you care? Probably not, but maybe some of you have had a
similar introduction to computers and maybe you can understand what I'm trying
to get at here. If not well don't loose any sleep over it, it probably just
means that you're more normal than I am.
Currently I have an Amiga 500 running Kickstart version
34.5 and Workbench version 34.21 release 1.3; and an Intel PC running
MS-DOS 6.22, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and RedHat Linux 6.1.
