Slógadh 1998

Choir:  The school choir has been quite active this year, participating in a number of competitions.  The children qualified for the All Ireland finals of the Slógadh competition, which was a great achievement.  The finals took place in Wexford town and the children performed excellently, enjoying their big day out.  Our National President, Mrs. Mary Mc Aleese was treaded to renditions by the choir of some Irish songs when she visited the school this year.  She was greatly pleased with their singing and the children felt it was a great honour to perform for her.   M Mahony was delighted with the occasion ~ "I feel proud that she came to our school and we sang for her".

The school choir continues to practice on a weekly basis in Room 9, where they are taken by Mr. Barrett and Mr. Walsh, who work with them on new and old material.  The choir is currently preparing for Confirmation in June.

Here are some of the childrens' comments on their involvement with the choir.

Slógadh 1998

Slógadh Gael Linn 1999:  For the first time ever, the Primary Schools 'Slógadh competition has introduced an Art Exhibition, the final of which is held during the easter holidays.  The Regional Festival (held at Mullingar, Co. Westmeath) saw Darndale S.N.S. emerge as the budding artists of the future.  In the 'Paintings section all 32 masterpieces at Under 9, Under 12 and Under 15 levels were chosen for the final.

In the Photography section 6 photos were also chosen to go forward for an All-Ireland Final which involves Primary Schools from all parts of the country.

'Ar Aghaidh Linn' and well done to all the participants.

You can view some of the paintings and the 9 photos in our Photo Gallery.

"When our teacher told us about the photo competition, we decide to go to Belcamp College to take some pictures.  Ms. Cooney brought in her camera for us to use.  We took pictures of the gardens, the lake, the burnt out cars, some rubbish and graffiti.  We took all the photos ourselves" - G. Boylan

"I really enjoyed entering the competitions"

"It's really great to be singing alongside your friends"

"It was fun and we worked very hard"

Lets hear what the artists have to say:

"I got the idea of my first picture from a video on painting.  First of all I drew the mountains, then the sky, the middle ground and then the foreground.  After the paint was dry I put in some detail with coloured chalks and pastels.  I also got a few ideas from my teacher"  - D. Mc Cluskey ('Cois na hAbhainn')

"My pictures were for the Under 15 section.  My first picture was called 'Mo Chomharsanacht', which means My Neighbourhood.  My second one was called 'Dúlra', which means Nature.  It took a lot of time to paint the pictures" - A. Kearney

Drama:

Down the years Slógadh has been a strong tradition of Our Lady Immaculate Senior School.  Every year teams participate in choral and drama competitions.  This year we recorded an unprecedented success by achieving 3rd place in the National Finals, ably led by Ms. Ryan.

The children from Room 2, Ms. Ryan's class took part in Slógadh in 1998.  In the finals, they came 3rd in Ireland.  Well Done!!!

Slógadh 98 - Room 2

My name is C Burns. I am in sixth class. And my teachers name is Mrs.Ryan. On Thursday we went on a trip to Wexford for the Slogadh. It took us about 3 hours going up and about 3 and a half hours coming back. We were fourth on stage. And we had to wait for a long time. But after we had finished we went for something to eat. And after that we went shopping until quarter to five. And we had a great time down in Wexford. We got home at about 8 o clock. We had a great time.

My name is P Kavanagh and I thought the play "Zak and the Music Box" was very enjoyable for all ages.  It was good we all enjoyed doing the play and it also helped us with Irish. My part in the play was the king and I enjoyed playing him.
