Our school has a great deal to offer apart from what you can read in the 'Our School' page.  We try to develop new ideas and practices regularly.  You will find more again on the 'More About Us' page.  Below are short pieces on some of the activities and you can click in the table above to find out more about those topics.

Cookery                                                             Can you get the lovely smell ?

We are very lucky to have a dedicated Cookery Room. It was set up in 1987 when we had an empty classroom and a number of teachers interested in cooking with the children.   Two cookers were bought initially.  One more was taken from the staffroom and later, we added two more, donations from teachers.  Over the years all children have had experience in the cookery room - and have loved bringing home the cakes etc.   Some cakes never do make it home!!  We also run cookery classes for parents and other groups.

Ms. Rush.

Fancy something tasty?

Our picture shows some children from Room 10 working busily in the room.  They really enjoy these classes.

"It's brilliant, we get to make great things, I love it".

"I look forward to going every Tuesday.  We choose ourselves what to cook"

Slógadh:

Slógadh is an annual competition held by Gael Linn.  It promotes the arts and culture through Irish.  Each team that competes in the competition must qualify for the annual finals by progressing through regional finals.

Prior to 1998 we have recorded sucesses by reaching 2nd place at the Ennis Finals in 1995, led by Mr. Séan Ó Donaile.  Our students love to participate in choir and dramatic activities as it helps them to express themselves through music and song.  For teachers, it gives them a chance to utilise their talents.

In the future it is hoped that our school will continue to compete strongly at each level of Slógadh.  It is a very special competition which realises the talents of the children.

You can read all about our trips to Slógadh on our new page Slógadh.

Physical Education:                               Dance to the Music

The school has use of the local Community Centre Hall.  One half hour slot per week is allocated to each class.  Lessons here are generally dedicated to skills development in basketball, soccer, Gaelic football, volleyball, athletics training and games.  Gerard Byrne, the PE Fás worker, works with the class teacher during these lessons.

The hall can also be used to hold large scale school-related gatherings such as the launch of the Magnet Schools.

The assembly area, just inside the main entrance, is used for a variety of activities.   As for the 'big hall', each class is allocated one half hour slot per week of assembly area use.  This is generally used for gymnastics, drama and floor games.   Small gatherings and presentations are also held here as well as the delicious buffet lunches so kindly provided on in house in-service days.

Ms. A. Gilliland.

Work Experience

We often have people coming to the school to do work experience, many of them Past Pupils.  Sometimes they work in the classrooms but recently we had 2 working in the computer room.

Work Experience In February, Amanda Crosbie came to work in the Computer room for two weeks.  Here she is with the children from Mrs. Kelly's class.  Amanda is doing a course in Coláiste Dhúlaigh and lives locally.

Our 6th class children themselves take part in work experience - they go to the Junior School and help out with reading with the younger pupils.

Drama                                                           Comedy / Tragedy

Drama has always been very popular in our school, and even more so in the last two years.  We had a drama specialist, Maurice Dunphy, working with all the classes from 1996 - 1998.  Each class was visited 5 - 6 times by Maurice, who introduced all the children to Drama through lots of different and enjoyable activities.   Maurice was also available to help with school plays.  Some of our "dramatic successes" !! were

1. Oliver Twist.  2. Spice Girls.  3. Smokebusters.

Ms. M. Docherty.

"Maurice is a drama teacher who came into our class and taught us the basics in Drama.  First of all, he played with us, which relied on concentration and quick thinking.  Often he would give us an object and ask us to use it in a sketch.  Once he gave us all a sheet of paper and asked us to write about a close relative or friend and then read it out.  I think it was very good and it had a big impact on my view of Drama."
