Nature's elements are a constant source of inspiration to me. The simplest of things carry pleasures that cannot be rivalled; rain and wind, sun and snow each bring with them their own wonders, all equally individual and all equally beautiful. There are limitless possibilities with which to illustrate these four powerful entities, examples of which I intend to seek out more as I progress on my journey as an artist. Their influence can be seen in lots of different ways in artwork. It cannot be avoided as they encompass so much of the natural world in one way or another. I chose to portray the elements in this set of pictures through Celtic patternwork and the divine feminine. Each element has its Goddess to protect and preserve it. I painted 'Air' and 'Fire' within a short time space back in1997. 'Water' and 'Earth' were not designed until last year (2000). When I started work on the first two pieces, I had a clear idea of how I wanted them to look, with absolutely no inclination of any further additions. A strange decision I suppose considering there are obviously four elements. I didn't think past them for a moment; a discipline I have since taught myself to master to ensure continuity in any series I plan. The Elements became Celtic Moons first set of colour greeting cards. |
