CHARLES CANTILLON

Charles Cantillon was a member of a well-known Carrigaline family who crossed the Atlantic in the early years of the twentieth century and, as his poem tells us, spent many years far from ’where de Cogan’s castle towers o’er the Owenabwee.’

The Cantillon family have been part of the economic life of Carrigaline for over one hundred years. They owned mills which once provided flour for their Carrigaline Bakery, an establishment that continues to provide the staff of life to a wide hinterland in south Cork.

Happy Dream

Happy dream I dreamt last night;
Love returned to me
After weary years of stay
Toiling in a land away
Far beyond the sea.

Hand in hand I thought we strayed
O'er the verdant lea,
’Neath green trees and shady bowers
Where de Cogan’s castle towers
O’er the Owenabwee.

Then, methought, I lovingly
Clasped her to my heart,
Fondly stroked her dark brown hair
As we promised then and there
Never more to part.

Ah, but what regrets, alas,
Waking brought to me;
Dreary leagues of ocean deep,
Prairies wild and mountains steep
Part my love and me.
