Firstly I'd better introduce myself. I'm Donal Norton, a musician/songwriter based in Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland. Friends in the music biz probably know me better as MO!
Currently I'm putting together a collection of songs that I've written over the past 20 years, for my 'debut' album hopefully due out nearer the end of the summer 2008 (which in reality could really be any time judging by the weather here in Ireland!)
The whole concept was to just do justice to some of my old songs that were gathering dust in the attic. Myself and me pal from years back, drummer Dave Brocklebank, spent a few weeks in his shed, hammering out the songs that are turning out to make the album.
The production approach was a bit different. The main principal was to enjoy what we were playing and to get a live feel for the songs the vocals, the piano and the drums were all recorded live simultaneously, (with complete disregard to sound spillage and other such recording horrors. in fact truth being known we probably broke more recording rules than we even aware of but the result is, i hope, a really fresh and live feel to all the songs on the album).
In a way both meself & Dave are sorta following in the steps of the late & greatest Phil Lynott, as both of us have spent time gigging with the man who nurtured Phillos talent, Brush Shiels (he of the REAL Skid Row fame). I can't speak for Dave but I certainly learned a lot from my time gigging with the legendary Brush.
As the recording progressed i was getting the feeling we had latched onto something musically wise and to put our aspirations to the test we put a couple of our songs onto the Garageband website so that the muso industry could cast their steely ears on our endeavors. Apart from me dignity what else had i really to lose! |
To both our surprise the reception the songs have garnered from the uber-critical Garageband folk has been over whelming and the songs have received bucket loads of awards and great reviews, including repeated awards for best vocals/production/keyboards/drumming etc (&then some more!). We've had songs receive track of the week awards as well as radio airplay in the States!

So what's the next Step then?
Well I'm busy putting the finishing touches to the album and then hope to farm the album out to have it properly mastered. In the meantime plans are afoot to do some live gigs and see if these songs really do kick it live.
We'll let ye know right here, how things are coming on. In the meantime thanks to everybody for their support.
Keeping the faith!

NEWS 2008
Feb 2008
Spent the week walking London, knocking on the doors of the powerful, trying to get some interest in the songs. Walked so much in fact, Aer Lingus had to wheelchair me onto the plane, as during the excursion my foot's arch collapsed and aftrt 2 days of hobbling on it , i was a wreck and the flight company weren't taking any chances, so they insisted on wheeling me onboard, emabarrassing really! Thank's to everybody who lent me their ears, friends Roman's and countrymen/women!
Album nearly finished. Had the boys over to put down some , holloring, foot stomps and and claps in the privacy of the kitchen! The result of the session can be heard on the album's title track " Back to the Day job".
(See pic on right).
