Listowel is an historic, cultural and literary town. It has heritage status. It has a very picturesque setting on the banks of the River Feale. On its meandering journey it flows by the old Castle which has been renovated and is now open to the public. It continues on past the racecourse to the Atlantic Ocean. Off the square is the Seanchaí Centre which has a bookshop. a restaurant, a cafe and the writers' week office. Music shows are held there frequently. The spacious Town Park contains a pitch and putt course and the Garden of Europe. In the small square there is a memorial to the Listowel playwright John B. Keane. A small section of the unique Lartigue monorail has been restored and runs during the summer months. Associated with it is a very interesting museum.
