         DROMAKEENAN N.S. PARENTS ASSOCIATION

NEWSLETTER No. 2
As we approach the end of another school year, the committee of the Parents Association are pleased to report that the objectives we set for ourselves this year have been achieved.
The launch of the Association on April 14th was generally acclaimed as a huge success. Our thanks to all the parents and friends of Dromakeenan NS who gave the event such wonderful support.
The Parents Association have assisted the parents of 6th class children to organise a graduation ceremony at Killavilla Community Centre on Thursday, June 15th. Next year the Parents Association will address the difficulties with regard to parking from 9.00 to 9.30 a.m. and from 2.00 to 3.15 p.m. at the front of the school. We will also investigate the ways in which we can encourage the Department of Education to provide much needed extra  accommodation at the school.  These projects will require enormous commitment on the part of the Parents Association, that is every parent of a pupil at the school. The committee cannot and will not carry out all this work alone. If you feel you can help in any way please do not wait to be asked. If we show no interest in our school, we should not be surprised if our children don’t either.

The pupils of Dromakeenan NS have been successful on sporting, academic and cultural fronts this year. These are some of their success stories:

Fleadhanna, which took place during May.
Camogie 2000
The girls of Dromakeenan National School are yet again the Offaly large schools camogie champions after a terrific win over Kinnitty on June 9th last.

The 12 a side camogie championship got underway with a game in Ballyskenagh against Scoil Mhuire of Tullamore. The Dromakeenan girls got the year off to a great start with a hard-earned victory.
On the following Wednesday the girls travelled to Kinnitty to meet up with last year’s beaten finalists. On a cool and windy evening the scoring was scarce, but Dromakeenan ran out the eventual winners with just a point to spare.
The next game produced a walkover for ourselves against the girls of Rath. A victory over St. Philomena’s the following week sent Dromakeenan into the county final for the third year on the trot.
The final took place on Thursday last in Rath against our old rivals Kinnitty. Dromakeenan were in top form on the evening with great goals coming from Aoife Loughnane and Megan Hennessy. Sarah Doherty was also on scoring form sending great points over the bar from frees. After a tough second half the girls earned their third county title in a row and Nicola Shanahan stepped forward to collect the beautiful trophy. Following a lap of honour all headed back to the south of the county where the car horns are still ringing in everybody’s ear.

The camogie panel is as follows:

Denise Hannon,  Iseult Cody, Lee-Ann King, Nicole Curry, Laura O’Brien, Sarah Doherty, Nicola Shanahan, Kate Ryan, Jennifer England, Megan Hennessy, Carol Franks, Aoife Loughnane, Carmel Rooney, Cora Mc Cormack, Clodagh Bergin, Caoimhe Carroll,  Tríona O Lone
