£44,154
Éire Nua Building Fund
Belfast / Derry

Republican Sinn Féin has secured a premises at 229 Falls Road, Belfast as the organisation's public office in the city. This excellent location near the city centre will give a much-needed focus and morale boost to our growing membership in Belfast and throughout Ulster.

The initial cost of the office was £60,000 (punts) and since it was acquired major refurbishment has been carried out on the building. Added to that is the cost of security to protect it and those using it from the British Crown Forces, loyalist death squads and others who would threaten true Republicans. This, and currency fluctuations. have added another £15,000 (punts) to the cost.

Over £20,000 has been contributed to the fund to date and the committee is very grateful for the valuable support of members and supporters. The debt is now reduced to £44,154.

Contributions, which will be gratefully acknowledged, can be made:

  1. To the following: Mary Ward, Co Donegal; Frank McCarry, Co Antrim; Jimmy McElhinney, Co Tyrone; Geraldine Taylor, Belfast; Michael McGonigle, Co Derry; Joe O'Neill, Co Donegal; Mick McManus, Co Fermanagh; Larry McMahon, Co Monaghan
  2. By sending a donation to: Ard Oifig, 223 Parnell Street, Dublin 1 or to 229 Falls Road, Belfast.
  3. or send a donation to:
Éire Nua Building Fund, Bank of Ireland, (Six Counties) Draperstown, Co Derry, a/c number 14164268, quoting the Branch code 90-48-43 or donate by Standing Order.

‘Reverse decision’ call

PRIESTS and Christian Brothers who allegedly abused young boys in their care should not be treated any differently from the general public when it comes to taking cases against them, Joe Lynch, spokesperson for the Brugha/Sabhat Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin in Limerick said in May.

Joe Lynch said that the decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions not to proceed with charges against clerical figures on the grounds that considerable time has passed since the alleged offences must be reversed.

He said that Limerick solicitor John Devane had highlighted the matter when he revealed that up to 40 cases will not be taken against men who abused young children in their care.

“The State has a responsibility to see that justice is done. These young boys, mainly from Limerick city, were placed in the care of the religious and it is only now that what they suffered is emerging.

“The State was responsible for placing the boys in these institutions in the first place and now the State cannot wash its hands like Pontius Pilate of the consequences of the awful abuse suffered by some men at the hands of the religious orders.”

Flannery family at Nenagh launch

THE recently-published Accepting the Challenge – the Memoirs of Michael Flannery was launched in Nenagh, Co Tipperary on April 27 last.

The launch function was held in the Nenagh Rugby Club. Laochra Luimnigh by Nóra de hÓir and Songs of Resistance were also launched.

Geraldine McNamara, Co Tipperary presided and the principal speaker was Dr Brian P Murphy, historian. Seán Ó Brádaigh and Nóra de hÓir also spoke.

The attendance included Andrew Flannery, Shinrone, Co Offaly, nephew of Michael Flannery; Máiréad Flannery, Seighery, niece; Seán Flannery, nephew; Ann Ormond, niece and her daughter Stephanie and husband Jack Ormond, and Máirín McLoughlin, cousin.

Donal Malone, Tipperary and Des Long, Limerick were in charge of arrangements for the night and over £500 worth of books were sold.

Bookshops in Nenagh, Thurles, Tipperary Town and Limerick city were supplied on the following day.

Michael Flannery (1902-1994) was well known in Republican and GAA circles in Co Tipperary and his book of memoirs has created much interest in that area.

Dempsey challenged over Waste Bill NEWBRIDGE Action Committee, one of the groups in the Galway Safe Waste Alliance, have a recording of an extract from the RTE Six-One News on June 2, 2000, where Noel Dempsey stated “I don’t think, in fairness, I’d want an incinerator, or I’d want a landfill at my own back door”. Therefore we were surprised to learn of Noel Dempsey’s assurance to the 26-County Senate that “there is an informed consensus that modern municipal waste incinerators, employing modern technologies and subject to compliance with strict environmental standards, do not present a significant risk to the environment or public health.” . . .

‘Peace processes’ show similar flaws COMPARISON of the Middle East and Irish peace processes can be uncomfortable. In the early 1990s, when Middle Eastern leaders were being feted on the White House lawn, Irish commentators would point to the apparent resolution of that conflict as a model to follow. Irish republicans, in particular, pleaded that if American and Israeli leaders could bring themselves to shake the hand of Yasser Arafat - for years portrayed as an arch-terrorist - then surely the same recognition could be extended to them by the British and unionists. Now, with the evident collapse of the Oslo peace accord - underlined by Ariel Sharon’s all-out assault this week on the Palestinian Authority and 400 Palestinian deaths since October - there is understandably a reluctance in Ireland to press the comparison . . .

Buying the GAA DURING the recent debate on the GAA’s Rule 42, which prohibits the use of GAA grounds by other sporting organisations, for many within the media and indeed within the GAA itself the entire matter boiled down to be not a question of principle but simply a question of the £60 million grant being offered by the 26-County government. The very soul of the GAA, it appears, was for sale to the highest bidder and it was to be used simply as a pawn in the building of what appears to be a monument to ego, the ‘Bertie Bowl’ . . .

Book review: Landmark book on great Republican Accepting the Challenge – the Memoirs of Michael Flannery. Edited by Dermot O’Reilly. Cló Saoirse, 223 Parnell Street, Dublin 1. Hardback £10, Paperback, £7.50. MICHAEL Flannery was one of the great Republican figures in the 20th century. Part but only a part of this was due to the long and active life he led from his birth in Co Tipperary in 1902 to his death over nine decades later in New York in 1994. Like John Devoy and Diarmaid Ó Donnabháin Rosa before him, indeed like the New York-born Éamon de Valera, their long lives inevitably mean that they will have a place in history. But living so long also runs the risk of compromise, of failure in older years, of tiring and giving up, of taking pragmatic and practical decisions in a changed context and in circumstances old age may not fully understand that can seem to be and indeed in some cases are a contradiction of all these people stood for in their youth . . .
