‘Reverse decision’ callPRIESTS and Christian Brothers who allegedly abused young boys in their care should not be treated any differently from the general public when it comes to taking cases against them, Joe Lynch, spokesperson for the Brugha/Sabhat Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin in Limerick said in May. Joe Lynch said that the decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions not to proceed with charges against clerical figures on the grounds that considerable time has passed since the alleged offences must be reversed. He said that Limerick solicitor John Devane had highlighted the matter when he revealed that up to 40 cases will not be taken against men who abused young children in their care. “The State has a responsibility to see that justice is done. These young boys, mainly from Limerick city, were placed in the care of the religious and it is only now that what they suffered is emerging.
“The State was responsible for placing the boys in these institutions in the first place and now the State cannot wash its hands like Pontius Pilate of the consequences of the awful abuse suffered by some men at the hands of the religious orders.”
