Activities

When we started the programme in Scoil Iosagain, one of the first things we did was designate an area for the Green Schools Wall. We got a whiteboard and 2 memo boards placed there. It's in a prominent place in the school and on the way to the parents room so they pass it often. All our survey results, posters, photographs etc are displayed on this wall. Also, we have a large list of local recycling facilities on display here. We put together a report on our progress for the Christmas newsletter which is sent to every students home. The Cork Independent wrote a piece about our Green Schools initiative and our Day of Action was also reported on in the Evening Echo. We often send notes home with regard to going green eg. Parental permission for various activities, informing parents of our litter and waste policies etc. Suggestions from all the class teachers and care-taking staff are always welcome . All our decisions and progress we make as a committee are relayed to the care-taking staff, the teachers etc. by means of dialogue and at the staff meetings. This gives everyone the chance to give their ideas and discuss them. Timetables or order of events for our National Spring Clean Day or our Day of Action are sent to all the teachers and parents. The boys made A4 posters using their computer skills to remind people about our endeavours in the area of litter and waste : posters for recycling bins, printing on both sides etc. A great way to get the whole community involved is through the Jack and Jill foundation campaign where the boys bring in unwanted or unused phones and they are recycled for the benefit of sick babies.
