B-25J Ground Work One
The B-25J was a medium level attack aircraft. The version modeled in
AW is the "J" model which was a late variant with more powerful
engines and used as a level bomber. Level bombing will not be covered in
this section.
The B-25H was the low level ground attack variant. It carried an awesome
bank of forward-firing .50 Cal MGs and some aircraft were fitted with the
T9E1 75mm Cannon.
The B-25Hs armed with "skip-bombs" caused havoc across the Pacific,
knocking out the Japanese Lines of Supply.
Though we don't have the "H" model in AW the current "J"
model does a fair job at nailing anything that can be strafed or bombed
on the ground. That means all aircraft and vehicles (don't duel with a
FlakPanzer though... stay 1,500 yards above them) and all structures.
Dive-bombing is the preferred choice. It's very accurate, both sticks
will knock out any structure, and you'll give the fighters a nice present
by dropping in on them. No sense in staying up high... we want to get down
and get a few pings on the figthers. After all they will climb up and catch
you on the way home. Might as well cause a bit of havoc before expiring.
Neutral field ack in the European arena is fierce. You can shoot and
shoot at it and get so many pings it'll look like "local hits' are
on... but it's way too tough to be strafed in the short amount of time
you have to kill it. It has a high rate of fire too. Drop a stick on it
instead.... end of story. Better yet get a fighter jock to go heavy and
nail it for you.
All other acks should be strafed. Line up as soon as you spot the black
dot, full throttle, aim for 250-275KIAS but no faster on the attack run,
and start hosing from a good distance away. Try for about 10degrees nose
down in the dive. A little rudder goes a long way in helping to correct
aim and keep the tracers on the target. Lay the rounds right on top of
it and pull up nice and gentle. A sudden jerk away with the elevator will
break your wings. With a little patience, a bit of practise (online...
we have no acks offline in Mac AW), and a few deaths along the way you'll
get the knack of nailing the acks in one pass more often than not. See
the B25e.cam for an example of how
easy it is to nail acks in the Pacific. You have to hand it to the Air
Warrior ack gunners. No way are they going to run for cover as you roll
in on them... they keep shooting back |
