Hornet 1.1.3... the choice of champions! No RWR, and no padlock... remember trying to find the bogey after the merge with no radar lock? Though the Early Raiders scenario is fairly easy it is also fairly unique. No 10 AAM-equipped Su-27s or SAMS that won't die will appear. The NKAF fighters fly low, fast, and with radars off. They acquire you visually and engage you with little warning. The Su-27s in this scenario ingress above Mach, and real low... you can miss them easily and if you are low on fuel/AAMs when you do spot them you won't catch them.

There are Mig-21s stationed on roads across the "fence"... you won't see them on the Enemy Plane view... they'll wait until you pass near and then launch. You'll have little warning... a couple of "pip-pip-pip" sounds then tracers will announce their arrival. They carry guns-only.

A row of AAA lines the "fence". They won't show on RWR either... they will just wait until you are right over them. Infra-red guided SAMs are stationed near the NKAF bases. Take special care when you do cross into North Korea therefore.

 Early Raiders

Scenario Briefing: The NKAF are targeting the bridges in South Korea to impede Allied armour movements. Their SOP has changed to running intrusions with single and paired bogeys, fast, low and with radars off. They are primarily on bombing raids and will try to avoid you until you get within visual range (7nms). You have Allied support in the shape of two F-18s, and 2 Vipers... with an AWACS flying around usually. The Vipers will target AAA at Kaesong AB... then CAP that base for recovering NKAF raiders. We expect bomber and fighter-bomber raids this morning.

Words from the Skipper: "Nugget? Stay frosty and fly safe!"

Scenario Notes: You will start at either Chuncheon or Dongducheon AB. There is a F-18 at each base, Hornet One at Chuncheon, Hornet Two at Dongducheon. Take off and circle, waiting for the F-18 to take off too. Make him form up with you and then head either West or East at 12,000 feet bALT. There are at least: 3 Mig-21 escorts, one Bear, 1 Su-27 (running fast... radar off), and 3 Floggers. They are all heading for bridges in South Korea... after 75 minutes all NKAF action will be finished, and the bogeys recovered at their bases. You need 5 NKAF kills to end the scenario. Be aware to infra-guided SAM threats when you cross the NK border. Be also aware to Fishbeds launching from roads...

"When I tested an early version of this mission something which I have always wanted to see in Hornet happened. I was recovering at Dongducheon AB with the pair of Vipers. We were all in the pattern, and I was trying to get into a good landing with them. I had thought all the bogeys were dead at that stage. I'm turning onto "cross-wind" when I spotted one of the Vipers plunging into the ground just as he entered "final". I thought he had ran out of fuel and was making a note to do something about it when right in front of me the other Viper exploded in a flash of tracers! "What?!"... suddenly "pip-pip-pip. ENGINE LEFT were the next sounds I heard. I had just been "vulched" by a pair of computer-controlled Mig-21s who had targeted the two Vipers first and not me. As the Vipers were locked onto a landing sequence and no AAMs were inbound they did not avoid the threat. The Migs took out the Vipers and swerved onto me in the same pass. I never saw 'em and I never even heard 'em! I was real upset by that... it's too easy to depend on the RWR, wingmen, and radar in this sim. Making the bogeys fly around with radars off makes it a little more "up close and personal"." - front [email to D.Allen Smith, March1998]
