Introduction
The most enjoyable ride in Hornet 3.0.1 is the
Mig-21. It is severely outclassed by the Hornet and the Flanker. However,
for me, it is the ultimate, and challenging, ACM machine. When you get
a kill in this plane you have really earned it. What we have done is take
the "Su27 STRiKER" missions and remove the Flanker-B. We have
replaced it with the Mig-21 and that is what you now fly.
The enemies and mission aims are still the same.
You still have two wingmen, and limited IQAF support in the shape of Mig-23
and Mig-27 Floggers.
Notes
Your load outs are now drastically reduced. You
have no AMRAAM-type missiles, only heat seekers. You only have access to
MK82LD-type bombs and for some variety we have left in the "Durandal".
You can still carry 3 "bags" of fuel.
Your wingmen now carry four heat seekers in all
missions, with one and sometimes two "bags" of fuel. Be careful
of your fuel situation... this Mig-21 has a limited internal fuel capacity
of 9,000lbs.
The top speed of the Mig-21 at 15,000feet is just
over 1.8 MACH, with mediocre acceleration. The F-16s and even the Hornets
(unloaded) will catch you... so running away is no longer an option.
The "roll-rate" of the Mig-21 in these
missions is better than average, so use it to "roll" out of trouble.
As usual set the Pilot Skill Level to Maximum
in these missions. I have found that if I turn down the "Lethality"
of the Allied and IQAF weapons to "1" or even "2",
I have better success. I keep the levels equal. It's much more satisfying
to see some "sparks" flying off an enemy jet only harming it
slightly, rather than the massive shock of an air burst that you see with
the default settings. Of course it's better to be hit by a .22 than by
a .45 so set the Allied settings low too. Now your Mig-21 can take a hit
or two from the Hornets and keep flying... maybe not fighting but at least
flying.
I have yet more success in these missions if I
approach them with the knowledge that I am heavily outnumbered. Instead
of pushing on headlong into the middle of a bunch of Allied fighters I
skirt the edges and try to get at least one or two. Then I head for home!
I think that this would be a realistic tactic of a Mig-21 pilot faced with
a flight of four intruding Hornets, it also seemed to be the real IQAFs
response to the Allied might. Stick around and you'll run out of luck.
Finally, try to get within 2nms of the enemy before
wasting your heat seekers. Those Hornets can and have dodged all the missiles
I fired at them with Pilot Skill Level set on Maximum. I like to get right
on his six and take advantage of the turning ability of the Mig-21. Then
I let him have it... and follow up with guns.
Training
Try out the Training missions to see just how
different it is to fight Vipers and Hornets with Mig-21s... you will see
how the Hornet can really haul itself around... try to keep your "E"
up, the Mig-21 in this sim. bleeds it like a hole in the head (hint: if
you hear the "stall-horn" push the nose down and roll out of
trouble).
It handles really badly below 200KIAS. The Hornet
does not like it much below 200KIAS either but the Mig-21 really hates
it... add in the low rate of acceleration (without AB) and it's bad tactics
to get slow.
"Betty" will tell you all about "Engine
Left" and "Engine Right" when you get hit, but she's lying...
you only have one engine. If your plane is on fire eject... don't try to
ride it out, the Hornets have a habit of of using you for target practice
on the way down. Also you will LOSE mid-air collisions in these missions.
Sometimes you can survive one in a Hornet... you won't in the Mig-21.
Radar
I use the TWS radar setting with 1) Scan Azimuth
set on 40degrees, 2) Scan Elevation set to 4b, and 3) range set to 40nms
or 20nms.
Mission Replays
These replays will only work with the Mig-21 STRiKEBed
installed mission set. Enemy Pilot Skill levels were set to maximum, and
Weapons Lethality was set to "1" for both sides.
