About the work
|
My work is dominated by figures, be they human or
animal, in some form of landscape or space. A simple line across an
image can create this illusion. These characters and creatures are
cartoon like. I see them as dark and humorous - ‘Never
a truer word spoken in jest.’ I use graphite sticks,
pencils and acrylic on paper.
I try to work intuitively. When I draw, I draw. I
make marks on the paper. The images appear. As I work and refine them,
they change and evolve. Sometimes I leave them in their raw bare state.
As the work evolves I become consious of the composition and the possible
relationship between the images.
I try to lose myself, my ego, in this process thus allowing myself
to be surprised by the images unfolding. This method appears to be
a contradiction, a battle between reason and anarchy. Conscious and
subconscious. Light and dark. Battle may be too strong a word as one
relies on the other. It is a symbiotic reationship.
‘There is no such
thing as good art or bad art, but honest or dishonest art.’
