Nikon Coolpix series was the starting point for my digital photography.

I started with a Coolpix 900S, the S was the all important sync socket which separated the Coolpix as a "professional" class camera in it's day.

It was a race between the CP900 and the Oly 1400, the latter being a bit noisier and lighter and definitely not confidence building. Fortunately Nikon, a very progressive company in the old days fitted the sync socket before Olympus.

The 900S lasted only three months at a cost of IR£1,300 (€1,650) to be replaced by the (blind) CP950 at £1,500 (€1.904) and I bought two of and all the accessories.

As I mentioned, Nikon were a very progressive company in those days and they had a firmware released pretty smartly and user downloadable, none of that nonsense with the "professional" Nikons that were to come later.

CPs were great except for people pictures, I still have a CP990 and the kids have given it a right bashing taking it up mountains and down dales in their school trips, it is getting the worse for wear now and I might buy a similar machine again as it's just so lovely.

And old page.
