SB80DX in slave mode

Camera trigger, D1x & SB28DX. Flash set on D100 to A auto F8 and the D1X set to either M or A with slow flash sync. This type of assignment is a weekly event for our dining out column. The extra flash helps to eliminate unsightly black holes that look ever so bad when published.

We always use an SB or Metz slave gun but the SB80DX will be the instrument of choice from now on. It seems to expose far better and we don’t actually need direct line of sight for short distances. We have not done enough work yet with this set-up to say much – except we’re pleased with it first outing.

Top shot is the bar, an area that can typically soak up flash power and look very monochromatic - the second flash adds a side light and a little modelling.

Next shot the flash is used in two ways - firstly the background is illuminated thus avoiding those nasty black holes and secondly we illuminated the stained glass for effect - this is rough and ready stuff so we don't worry about a few blow outs for our newspaper.

Third shot has us doing something very similar - killing the black holes and illuminating the glass - this glass was jet black without the second flash and combined with the establishment decor - made it look dirty - I think we avoided that.

Last shot was not selected for printing but we tried to introduce a little drama by using the gun to cast shadows - this one is interesting but is a bit too bright at the right edge - I'd crop to eliminate some of this and straighten it up - but the content with the plain table and lack of decoration makes this a poor shot - but I think it illustrates a technique fairly well nontheless.

Next week I'll try the D100 if I have a suitable venue.
