Clonakilty kicked off with no less than seven first team regulars either absent or on the injury list. Nick Harrison made his debut in central midfield. Leeside made the home side pay for their wastefulness in front of goal and equalised 10 minutes into the second half. A long clearance out of defence caught the AFC defence napping and the Leeside striker slotted past a stranded Padraig Horan. Clonakilty moved Noel Jordan up front with Martin White and the change had the desired effect. Clon turned on the style and scored three times in a fantastic ten minute spell to secure the points. AFC scored a third five minutes later when Noel Jordan rounded a defender and then the Leeside goalkeeper for a brilliant individual goal. Martin white grabbed his second of the afternoon when he finished off a flowing AFC move involving Daniel Herod and Noel Jordan. The win moves Clonakilty AFC up into 5th place in the League table. * Congratulations to the Clonakilty AFC representatives on this year's West Cork Schoolboys League side who finished a historic 7th overall at the Kennedy Cup in Limerick last week. Coach Martin White and Goalkeeper Shane Deasy were part of the squad that secured their second highest finish in the Kennedy Cup ever. 7th overall out of 32 competing counties is a tremendous achievement considering the West Cork Schoolboys League is one of the smallest leagues represented in the competition.

* Clonakilty AFC Emergency General Meeting took place in the Parish Hall Clonakilty on Friday the 1st of June. Secretary, Chris Connor, gave a brief presentation on youth coaching and background information on Clon AFC's youth policies. Chairman, James O'Hea spoke briefly before opening the discussion to the meeting attendees.

A lively debate followed with each person present giving his / her opinion on what they felt the best policy for the club's youth and under age players should be for the coming season. Views were expressed passionately but at the end of the discussion a conclusion was drawn as to the best way forward for the forthcoming West Cork Schoolboys League season.

It was decided that all age groups up to and including the Under12 grade would focus on the enjoyment of playing and participating in the game of football rather than focused solely on winning trophies. At Under 14 level (and U16 level), the club now plans to field it's strongest possible first team but also field a second U14 team to make sure every player within that age group is still catered for during the forthcoming season.

* Clonakilty AFC Over35's to Represent Ireland in Prestigious European Soccer Tournament

A squad of fourteen Clonakilty players are set to participate in the 5th WV-HEDW International Fraternization Tournament in Holland this weekend. The prestigious tournament takes place on the 26th and 27th May on the pitches of WV-HEDW, one of the oldest and most renowned soccer clubs in Amsterdam.

The squad is comprised of some of the best players from this seasons Clonakilty AFC Over 35's league and is the only team traveling from Ireland. Teams from Austria, Belgium, The Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Poland and Scotland are also set to compete. The Clonakilty AFC Over35 squad have been training vigorously over the past number of weeks in preparation for the tournament. Though the atmosphere is always friendly, a very high standard of soccer is still expected throughout the competition. The team is traveling with a relatively small squad, so each player can expect ample game-time with six thirty minute matches scheduled over the two days. The competition will be overseen by qualified KNVB (Dutch Football Association) referees.

Clonakilty AFC is currently fundraising for its proposed new Sports Complex development. Squad member and Secretary of Clon AFC, Chris Connor, is hoping to use the opportunity to study the high standard of facilities of the WV-HEDW club. The Dutch club's complex includes excellent facilities to cater for a large number of teams including six perfectly groomed grass pitches, dressing rooms and a large clubhouse.

The tournament is a fantastic opportunity for soccer clubs from all over Europe to participate in competition and meet up in a social environment. It is hoped that Clonakilty AFC will forge links with some of the competing European teams that may lead to closer interaction for all age groups in the future. The Clonakilty AFC club is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year and the first team have already marked the occasion by securing promotion to the West Cork Premier League. The club wishes the Over 35's squad every success in the European competition.
