Abacus Media AFC

Current Clonakilty AFC centre-back Nick Harrison's old club, Abacus Media A.F.C. travelled from England to Clonakilty last weekend to play a Summer friendly against the AFC. Abacus were founded originally in 1997 by Michael Regan, and were originally named The Whitegate A.F.C. and played its football in the South East Lancashire Football League until 2003, when unfortunately the League ceased to exist. Abacus Media was subsequently formed and 'The Media’ entered the Lancashire and Cheshire League and in the following season expanded to 2 teams. The club went from strength to strength under the leadership of (the late) John Rees who helped the club obtain Adult FA Charter Standard status (continuing to retain this status from 2008 for another 3 years), John unfortunately passed away in late 2006 and is sadly missed by all members and friends of the club. The first team currently ply their trade in the Premier League while the 2nd team play in Division B in the Lancashire and Cheshire League. The visiting squad to Clonakilty last weekend was made up of 19 1st & 2nd team players. The first team finished 4th in what is an extremely competitive Premier Division, only 2 steps away from semi-professional football. Abacus Media arrived in Clonakilty on a fine run of form, unbeaten in their last 8 competitive games.

There was a lively opening to proceedings with both sides intent on attacking at the earliest opportunity. Clon enjoyed the brighter start and capitalised on their early possession when Martin White netted after 20 minutes with a great finish to put the hosts 1-0 ahead. Abacus responded well and forced Clon keeper' Padi Horan into a succession of excellent saves. The pressure eventually told on an overworked AFC defence when the visitors deservedly equalised shortly before half time to leave the sides level going into the break.

Clon thought they had regained the lead shortly after the restart but Martin White was denied a certain goal by a world class save from Media's goalkeeper. Abacus went 2-1 ahead five minutes into the second half with a well taken effort and looked set for victory. Noel Jordan had other ideas and the AFC striker scored an absolute stunner, curling his effort into the top corner of the net from 25 yards out to tie the game for a second time. Abacus were not to be denied however and scored the winner with 5 minutes to go after some poor Clon defending. Final Score: Clonakilty AFC 2 Abacus Media AFC 3.

Clon AFC: Padraig Horan, Micheal Griffin, Ian O'Driscoll, Nick Harrison, Aidan Pendlebury, Daniel Herod, Michal Ardelli, Donal O'Donoghue, Liam Anthony White, Martin White, Piotr Stankiewicz, David Gilbert, Chris Connors, Conal O'Donovan, Eoin O'Donoghue, Noel Jordan and Mike Sullivan.

* Clonakilty AFC Under12's - League Title Victory - MATCH REPORT

Clonakilty AFC held Skibbereen to a 3-3 draw to clinch the SuperValu West Cork Schoolboys under-12 League title for 2007-08 in the Baltimore Road recently.

The under-12 league decider kicked off before an expectant crowd with Clon working hard at closing down the Skibb midfield. Skibb were forced to defend their 18 yard box in a dominant opening period for the visitors but Clon failed to make an impression in the final third. Skibb took advantage in the 8th minute in the home side’s first attack. The home side were awarded a penalty when Stephen McCarthy was brought down in the box. Sean Deasy took responsibility and put the hosts 1-0 ahead with a confident strike.

The visitors forced a succession of corners but defenders Felix Millar and Cillian Newman stood firm. Clon were rewarded for their attacking efforts in the 12th minute when Jack Cowhig was on the end of a flowing move, netting from 10 yards with a sweet left foot strike. The visitors were almost caught out by a quick Skibb counter-attack in the 18th minute but Stephen McCarthy was denied by a superb Niall McCarthy stop. Skibbereen continued to look dangerous on the break and Stephen McCarthy sprung the offside trap in the 25th minute. The striker made no mistake with a cool finish despite the close attention of two Clon defenders. The same player almost made it 3-1 right on half time but yet another Niall McCarthy stop kept his side in the game. A couple of surging runs from the excellent Jack O'Mahony brought Clon back into the game but a breathtaking opening 30 minutes concluded with Skibb 2-1 ahead.

Owen Collins had the first effort of the second period only to find the side-netting from an acute angle. Eoin Ryan tested Idriss Rqibi with a long range effort in the 35th minute but didn't have long to wait for a deserved equaliser. Ryan produced a moment of magic in the Skibbereen penalty area to net a real goal-poachers effort to tie an enthralling encounter at 2-2. Clon were guilty of losing concentration at the vital moment and Skibb re-took the lead within 60 seconds. Sean Deasy's free kick from just inside the Clon half was allowed to bounce all the way into the goal for a bizarre effort. 3-2 to Skibb and the hosts had one hand on the title.

The excitement reached fever pitch with the sixth goal of an extraordinary game. Jack Cowhig curled a free-kick into the top corner to tie the game at 3-3 and hand the advantage back to Clon. Skibb had little choice but to go for broke and pushed everyone forward in search of a winner. Owen Collins had an effort correctly ruled out for offside and Clon twice cleared off the line in frantic close to the game. Sean Deasy curled a fabulous effort just wide but AFC held out for the draw and the SuperValu under-12 League title.

Clonakilty AFC held Skibbereen to a 3-3 draw to clinch the SuperValu West Cork Schoolboys Under12 League title for 2007-2008 season. * Clonakilty AFC Under12's - Title Decider in Skibb
Clonakilty AFC Under12's are through to a SuperValu West Cork Schoolboys Under-12 League title-decider with Skibbereen in the Baltimore Road Ground on Monday evening, the 19th of May at 7pm. The young AFC side defeated Bunratty United 2-1 in Ballyvackey last Friday night following a pulsating encounter. Connor O'Driscoll put Bunratty ahead midway through the first half only for Jack Cowhig to equalise from a penalty 5 minutes later. Both sides went close and Clonakilty were indebted to Cian Crowley and Niall McCarthy in defence in keeping the incessant United attack at bay. Then deep into injury time Eoin Ryan crossed and Jack O'Mahony pounced to seal a famous victory and keep Clon on course for the under-12 title.

* CLONAKILTY AFC FINISH SECOND IN BEAMISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Clonakilty AFC have finished an unbelievable second following their first season back in the top flight of West Cork League soccer. The AFC's three remaining games against Kilmichael Rovers and Drinagh Rangers (Home and Away) have now been awarded as three 0-0 draws as Clon couldn't be overtaken for second place in the Beamish Premier League table.

All in all it has been a remarkable season for the AFC culminating in the historic Beamish Cup triumph over Bunratty United and a creditable runners-up spot behind the champions Skibb, whom we beat home and away!!!

* CLONAKILTY AFC COMPLETE LEAGUE DOUBLE OVER SKIBBEREEN
Clonakilty AFC made sure of the runners-up spot in the West Cork League Beamish Premier League in their first season back in the top division with a comprehensive 4-2 victory at home to Skibbereen in Inchydoney last Sunday. A brace from Martin White along with further efforts from Piotr Stankiewicz and Liam Anthony White earned the AFC all three points and made sure of second spot in the league table irrespective of any of the remaining results in the league this season.

Martin White set Clonakilty AFC on the road to victory after only five minutes with a terrific volley from just inside the Skibb penalty area. The visitors responded well to falling behind so early and went close with a succession of free kicks and corners. JP Reen wasted a superb opportunity to equalise when he blazed over from 10 yards with only the goalkeeper to beat. An injury to a Skibb defender brought a halt to proceedings for some time and the delay seemed to upset Skibb's rhythm.

Clon AFC added two further goals during a 20 minute purple period just prior to the interval. Piotr Stankiewicz finished off a flowing move to put the AFC 2-0 ahead and then Martin White grabbed his second to give the home side a 3-0 lead going into the break. Skibbereen fought hard to get back in the game but Clonakilty made it 4-0 with the goal of the game midway through the second half to make sure of their win.

Liam Anthony White utilised his devastating pace to race clear of a static back four and expertly place the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past the out-stretched arm of the Skibbereen net-minder. The game became scrappy for a time and Clonakilty AFC were guilty of falling asleep conceding two late, sloppy goals. There was still time for Noel Jordan to rattle the visitors crossbar and Daniel Herod see his goal-bound effort hacked off the line. The final score was Clonakilty AFC 4 Skibbereen 2.

Clonakilty AFC: Aidan Pendlebury, Eoin O'Donoghue, Ian O'Driscoll, Micheal Griffin, Donal O'Donoghue, Shane Buttimer, Michal Ardelli, Daniel Herod, Liam Anthony White, Piotr Stankiewicz, Martin White (Captain), Colin Lynch, Noel Jordan, Jonathan Hunt and Conal O'Donovan.

* CLONAKILTY AFC THROUGH TO SCHOOLBOY UNDER12 PLAY-OFFS
Clonakilty AFC solidified their place in the SuperValu West Cork Schoolboys League Under12 play-offs following a hard fought 3-2 win at home to Bay Rovers in Ballyvackey last Saturday. A brace of goals from striker, Eoin Ryan set the AFC on their way to an early 2-0 lead. Bay were also fighting for a place in the four team round-robin tournament to decide the U12 league title and showed great resilience to fight back to tie the game at 2-2. A late free kick on the edge of the penalty area from Jack Cowhig won the match for Clonakilty AFC after a five goal thriller. Clonakilty AFC will now contest the play-offs alongside Skibbereen, Bunratty United and either Leeside or Durrus to decide this year's champions.

* HUNT HEADS CLON AFC TO VICTORY AWAY TO BANTRY GUNNERS
A late goal from the evergreen Jonathan Hunt earned Clonakilty AFC all three points away to Bantry Gunners in Bantry last Sunday. AFC emerged with a creditable 2-1 victory having fielded a relatively under strength side and go joint-second in the Beamish Premier League with Dunmanway Town.

Clonakilty AFC kicked off with Aidan Pendlebury back between the sticks and a new central defensive pairing of Micheal Griffin and young Nick Peters. Noel Jordan partnered Piotr Stankiewicz up front in an unfamiliar AFC starting line-up. A disappointing first half ended scoreless with neither side on top in a sometimes fractious affair. Bantry Gunners enjoyed the majority of possession at the beginning of the second period and capitalised on their renewed efforts to deservedly take the lead. Clonakilty AFC's response was a positive one and the visitors equalised shortly afterwards with a well worked effort.

Good work from Noel Jordan created space on the edge of the Gunners penalty area and the AFC striker expertly squared the ball back for the in-rushing Daniel Herod to finish emphatically to the net to tie the game at 1-1. The sides exchanged chances at either end in a frenetic finish to the game but it was Clonakilty who converted from a dead ball situation with 10 minutes to go to seal a welcome victory.

Michal Ardelli swung in a free kick and somehow Jonathan Hunt reacted quickest to head the ball goal wards. Despite taking numerous deflections the ball somehow trickled over the line to give the AFC a lead they would not relinquish. Clon ran out deserving 2-1 winners and can look forward to a mouth-watering clash with Skibbereen in Inchydoney next Sunday.

Clonakilty AFC: Aidan Pendlebury, Eoin O'Donoghue, Shane Buttimer, Nick Peters, Micheal Griffin, Donal O'Donoghue, Jonathan Hunt, Michal Ardelli, Daniel Herod, Martin White, David Gilbert, Piotr Stankiewicz, Noel Jordan, Ian O'Driscoll and Conal O'Donovan.

* CLON AFC DEFEAT SKIBB 1-0
Clonakilty AFC travelled to the Baltimore Road ground in Skibbereen last Sunday and came away with a hard fought win over the current Beamish West Cork League Champions, Skibbereen. AFC took all three points with a 1-0 win courtesy of a fine Martin White effort - his 20th of a remarkable season - just before the interval. White capitalised on a rare Skibb defensive error to slip a neat left foot effort into the bottom corner of the net after good approach play from Michal Ardelli.

The game was played at a furious pace between two excellent footballing sides. The opening 45 minutes was one of the best halfs of WCL football played this season. Chances were at a premium but the quality of football on display was of he highest standard. Best for Clon included stand-in goalkeeper Aidan Pendlebury, Nick Harrison, Shane Buttimer, Piotr Stankiewicz and Colin Lynch. The AFC need only four more points to secure runner-up spot in the Beamish Premier League and are away to Bantry Gunners next weekend.

Clonakilty AFC: Aidan Pendlebury, Eoin O'Donoghue, Shane Buttimer, Nick Harrison, Donal O'Donoghue, Michal Ardelli, Colin Lynch, Daniel Herod, Martin White (Captain), Liam Anthony White, Piotr Stankiewicz, Jonathan Hunt and Conal O'Donovan.

* CLONAKILTY AFC WIN THE BEAMISH CUP!!!!

Memories are made of this.

What a day. For those lucky enough to be involved with the Clonakilty AFC club over the last three years (for some much longer than that) last Sunday saw the culmination of three remarkable years. Clonakilty AFC lifted the Beamish Cup for only the second time in their 40 year history and the first time since 1995. A 2-0 victory over a gallant Bunratty United sparked wild celebrations long into the night and Bank Holiday Monday morning.

The match report of this famous Clon AFC victory will appear in the coming weeks but the abiding memories of a tight cup final will include the heroic efforts of the Clon back four, the man of the match performance from Ian O'Driscoll, the Polish supporters who sang and chanted continually throughout the game, the Mandy tap-in to make it 2-0, the blustery wind that made playing conditions difficult on the immaculate Baltimore Road playing surface, the roar at the full time whistle, the celebrations in the middle of the pitch, the presentations being interrupted by the "Polish Bumps", Paddy Mac's Clonakilty flag being unfurled backwards, the handles of the Cup falling off within 10 seconds of returning to the dressing room, the cork off Witlod Fraceck's champagne nearly removing John O'Brien's forehead, the lingering smell of champagne on the playing kit, the singing, the dancing, the relief, the sheer joy and finally the realisation that this young team had finally come of age on the most important day of their AFC career's so far.

A word for the runners-up. The nicest compliment that can be made about Bunratty United is that they looked every inch a Beamish Premier League side throughout the final. The manner in which they attempt to play the game is similar to the AFC. Get the ball on the floor and pass it. They will naturally be disappointed to lose a cup final after such a tremendous run but Bunratty have a young squad full of quality players and a conveyer belt of impressive footballing youth talent on the way through. It is only a matter of time before they return to the Premier League and the Beamish Cup final.

The scenes which greeted the locals in the town of Clonakilty on the evening of the Cup final win will never be forgotten. Club stalwart, Paddy McCarthy, led the cavalcade of cars into the Brewery town while manager, Chris Connors, Captain Martin White and Man of the Match Ian O'Driscoll held on for dear life atop the Lorne Edmeade van. Tawnies Crescent must have thought it was singing sensation Deirdre Hayes and her army of supporters back again with all the noise but instead they left their armchairs to witness the first Clonakilty AFC Beamish Cup victory parade since 1995 taking place.

Loyal supporters of the AFC, DeBarra's public house, offered the perfect environment for the thirsty squad and the AFC playing staff did not disappoint. Roaring and singing to the musical beat of Ciaran Calnan's band, the AFC players, coaches and supporters sang and danced long into the night. Some left for their beds at closing time but most continued the party long into the night via the venue and then to the grand opening of Chris Connor's new nightclub at the end of town.

It was the perfect day for the AFC. All the sweat, blood and tears, hard work, tantrums, long strand runs over the dunes, training ground disagreements, lost matches, silly arguments, superb goals, memorable performances of a blockbuster season were all forgotten on one never to be forgotten day when everything went right for the AFC and the Beamish Cup returned to the Brewery town for the first time in over a decade..

What next? A period of recuperation for those who celebrated too excessively and then back to the training pitch on Friday night where thoughts will turn to the Baltimore Road ground for a mouth-watering league encounter with Skibbereen on Sunday.

* CLON AFC DEFEATED IN CARLING LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL

Clon AFC's long unbeaten run came to an end in Lisheens, Kealkil last Sunday with a 3-2 defeat to Bantry Bay Rovers in the Semi Finals of the Carling League Cup. The AFC were well below par but could have little complaint having been outplayed for the majority of the tie by a spirited Bay Rovers performance. Goalless at half time, the game finally burst into life shortly into the second period when Rovers went in front with a headed goal. Try as they might Clonakilty couldn't fashion an equaliser. The visitors pushed forward and were caught on the counter attack mid-way through the half and fell 2-0 behind. Bay were then reduced to 10 men and a deflected Jonathan Hunt shot gave the AFC hope with only minutes remaining. Tired defending allowed the home side to score for a third time and put the result beyond doubt. Aidan Pendlebury pulled another goal back deep into injury time for the AFC with a sweet strike but it proved too little too late. Bay Rovers deservedly progress to the League Cup final while Clonakilty AFC can now turn their attention to the Beamish Cup final with Bunratty United in two weekends time.

Clonakilty AFC: Padraig Horan, Micheal Griffin, Eoin O'Donoghue, Ian O'Driscoll, Shane Buttimer, Aidan Pendlebury, Michal Ardelli, Daniel Herod, Martin White (Captain), Noel Jordan, Jonathan Hunt, Joe Hennessy, Mike Sullivan, Ger McCarthy and Conal O'Donovan.

* CLON AFC QUALIFY FOR BEAMISH CUP FINAL WITH EXTRA TIME VICTORY OVER DUNMANWAY TOWN...

Clonakilty AFC 2
Dunmanway Town 1 (after extra time)

An outstanding extra time winner from Noel Jordan sent Clonakilty AFC through to their first Beamish Cup final in twelve years following a memorable 2-1 Semi Final victory over Dunmanway Town in Baltimore Road, Skibbereen. Clon were made to work hard for their victory by a dogged Dunmanway side after 90 minutes of an absorbing Beamish Cup tie failed to separate two evenly matched sides. Martin White broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when the Clon Captain timed his run to perfection to expertly slot the ball past a stranded goalkeeper and give Clonakilty a 1-0 lead. Dunmanway equalised in the 68th minute. Stephen O’Donovan unleashed a rocket into the bottom corner for a terrific individual effort. Dunmanway were reduced to ten men shortly before full time but the tie finished 1-1. The pressure finally told on an overworked Dunmanway defence when Martin White released Noel Jordan on the stroke of half time in extra time. The Clon striker looked to have overrun the ball but somehow managed to re-adjust his position and arrow a sublime shot past Vincent Healy for 2-1 Afc lead they would not relinquish. Clonakilty AFC had to withstand some anxious moments in the final minutes of extra time as Dunmanway threw everyone forward in an attempt to equalise until the final whistle eventually sounded and signalled a fabulous triumph for the Clon side.

Clonakilty AFC: Padraig Horan, Donal O'Donoghue, Eoin O'Donoghue, Ian O'Driscoll, Shane Buttimer, Liam Anthony White, Michal Ardelli, Daniel Herod, Martin White, Noel Jordan, Jonathan Hunt, Colin Lynch, Aidan Pendlebury, Joe Hennessy, Mike Sullivan, Micheal Griffin and Conal O'Donovan.

All roads lead back to Skibbereen now for a mouth-watering Beamish Cup final clash with Bunratty United on Easter Sunday.

* CLON AFC WIN FIVE GOAL THRILLER AT HOME TO DUNMANWAY TOWN...
Clonakilty AFC came from 2-0 down to record a remarkable 3-2 win at home to Dunmanway Town in the Beamish Premier League in Ballyvackey last Sunday. The result keeps Clonakilty on track to finish second to Champions, Skibbereen in the league and also served as a timely reminder to Dunmanway ahead of the Beamish Cup Semi Final between the two clubs next weekend. Dunmanway got off to a flier and were deservedly 2-0 ahead mid way through the first half. The visitors failed to add to their tally with a succession of missed chances but were good value for their half time lead. AFC - resting some key players ahead of the Beamish Cup semi final next weekend - re-grouped and looked a completely different team after the interval. Piotr Stankiewicz capped a tremendous individual display with a well taken brace of goals to bring parity to the score line.
