FROM THE HEADMASTER
Easter is almost upon us. Cricket practices have begun. The College grounds
have a wonderful spring-like appearance thanks, in part, to those weeks of rain
but especially to the hard work of our dedicated groundsman Benny Lynham. There
is still an air of some sadness about the place after the defeat of our JCT
in the semi final of the Leinster Junior Cup. The team should take heart in
the wonderful season they have had - which is documented elsewhere in this edition
- and in the pride taken by the whole school in their achievements. We acknowledge
our huge debt to their trainers, David Keenahan and David Murray, and also congratulate
the cheerleaders on leading us all in Jubilate Deo as well as in the more usual
refrains. However this atmosphere of sadness is changing. The imminent start
of the mock exams has generated a sudden interest in serious study amongst the
Third and Sixth Years. When it comes to concentrating the mind there is little
doubt that prospect of examinations comes a very close second to the prospect
of hanging!
With the approach of Holy Week it is appropriate to acknowledge the commitment of a significant number of boys to the morning Mass throughout Lent. It is also an opportunity to invite all families to join us in the celebrations of the Easter Triduum. The liturgies will be celebrated on Holy Thursday at 5 p.m., on Good Friday at 3 p.m. and the Easter Vigil will commence at 9 p.m.

The Music Trip couldn't have come sooner,
providing an interlude for twenty-nine music students amidst preparations for
the Leaving Cert. Led by Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, they were accompanied also by
some of the music class from Our Lady's and Mr. Mulgrew. We took in three cities
over six days, beginning with Salzburg before moving on to the imperial splendour
of Vienna. Along the way there was time to see the birthplace of Mozart and
one of Beethoven's many residences. After a morning at the bubbly outdoor baths
of Oberlau, it was onwards and eastwards to Prague for the last three days of
the trip. Though at the mercy of the variable Czech weather, we were guided
around the historic areas of the city, with just enough free time to sample
the local cuisine. The last evening was spent at the opera for a most enjoyable
performance of Dvorak's Rosalka. The last day allowed for some quick shopping
and then it was off to the airport again. It was, by common consensus, both
a fun and profitably passed week.
