DEBATING NEWS
The Semi finals of the Leinster Schools' Debating competition took place this week, and the Gonzaga team of Daniel Sinnott and Barry Glynn took their place in the final, defeating teams from CUS, Muckross and Castleknock (sweet revenge) in the process. The following night Sean Farrell, speaking in the Individual competition, lost out narrowly on a place in the Final. Next Wednesday sees Gonzaga in an unprecedented fifth consecutive Leinster final, when Barry and Dan will oppose the motion that "this house believes Sinn Féin has a place in an Irish government." The debate begins at 7 p.m. in the Arts block of UCD, and we would love to see as many teachers, students and other well wishers as possibe turn out to cheer us as we seek to defend our Leinster title, won last year by Sam Collins and David Whelan.
At this point a word of thanks is due to the other speakers this year who represented the College with honour and style: Daniel Bevan, Richard Waghorne, David O'Connor, Robert O'Connor and Paul Huston. Especially important to us this year was Alan Burns, who stood in for Dan Sinnott in the Quarter Final and ensured our continued involvement. Any success is a group effort and although two students speak, the work behind the scenes is of inestimable value. See you next Wednesday.

Congratulations to Oisin Byrne and Robert Costello on being offered places in the National College of Art and Design for 2002 - 2003 on the basis of the merit of their art work. We wish them both well in their future studies and careers. We can look forward to viewing their entrance portfolio work at the Sports Day Art Exhibition in May.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
Visitations to the Royal Hospital in Donnybrook will continue until the end of the school year. Any senior cycle students who are interested may join us after school on any given Monday or Tuesday. There is always room for more visitors.
We like to bring the residents of the hospital some Easter eggs around this time of year and we wish to appeal to any volunteers, old or new, to assist us in the distribution of these gifts. Of course, should anybody feel especially generous and wish to donate any Easter eggs to the Society, they are invited to give them to Mr Ó Briain in room 4.

STOA
Our group of 4th, 5th, 6th years were delighted to welcome Niall Crowley, a past pupil ('74) who spoke about how his work as an engineer in Mozambique had influenced his thinking and his commitment to work for equality. On returning from Mozambique he worked for Pavee Point for twelve years on behalf of the travelling community. He is now chairman of the Equality Authority and outlined his priorities. The questions from the boys revealed great interest and insight and made for stimulating discussion. We were grateful for his input and wish him well in his work.
