Cemeteries and Graves

This is a new page, I hope to show some photographs of the cemeteries and graves that my ancestors are burried in.

I only have the one cemetery and grave at the moment, but hopefully, I will had more as time goes by.

STRANGERS CEMETERY, PORTLAND
There were “Top-Hillers”, there were Under-Hillers, and then there were the “Strangers”. Those that lived on the top of Portland never really got on well with those on the Bottom of the island and because of this they were buried in their respective cemeteries. But then there were the “Strangers”, these were transients, people who had moved onto the island from other areas. My GG Grandparents were these Strangers. Mary Steele , born in Burton Bradstock but moved to Portland with her husband George Banks and her then, 6 children. Both Mary and her husband George are buried somewhere in this cemetery.

The headstone above, is of my G Grandparents Rosanna Banks and George Silsbury
(also buried in Strangers Cemetery). The epitaph reads:
In loving memory of Florence beloved wife of David Summerville who passed away August 27th 1937 sweet memories linger. Also Rosanna wife of George Silsbury who died February 6th 1938 peace perfect peace.
Florence was Rosanna’s daughter who strangely enough, died the very same day as her husband, who was a sailor and on the other side of the world at the time. George Silsbury’s ashes, are also buried here.
