Sometimes you give more away when covering up.
I
sent this email to Dr. Soho (SOHO's enquiry service)
on 24th February at 2:52 GMT, providing the graphic
at right to illustrate the missing data:
Hi,
I am a journalist researching the
SOHO images
for the 22nd Feb 2003.
There is a data gap in the available images.
There are no C2 or C3 images between
around 05:00 and 17:00.
The same gap affects the EIT 195.
Any ideas why this might be the case?
Many thanks
Fintan Dunne

Dear Fintan,
Many thanks for your note. As a result of SOHO's distant
orbit we are not always in contact with the satellite. When this
occurs there is a solid-state recorder on board where the data
is
stored and we retrieve these data once we're back in contact.
Such gaps can last up to 8 hours.
We also occasionally
have problems relaying the data, either from
the spacecraft to the receiving station or from that staion back
to the Goddard Spaceflight Centre, where it's stored. If this
is
the case then the data needs to be retrieved manually.
A combination
of the two occurred on the 22nd and as a result the
data you enquired about only became available late yesterday.
They're presently being processed and should be available online
within about an hour.
Best wishes,
Gareth Lawrence.

But this
was a barefaced lie. Because
meanwhile I had ALREADY
found some of the missing images in an Mpeg movie on a German
SOHO Mirror Site:

On this Page:
http://star.mpae.gwdg.de/daily_mpg/
Since Sun 23rd Feb !!
Which is the day before that email says they "became available."
As seen from the datestamp on the file at the daily Mpegs page
above.
