Kilmurry quarry

Mr Dunne says that this picture of the old quarry in Kilmurry always reminds him of the cowboy films he saw as a child. It makes him think of the word 'Arizona'. The quarry is owned by Padraic Whelan's father. Just before Christmas 1998, two of Mr Whelan's bullocks fell from the top of the quarry. One of them was killed and the other survived.

Furze

Furze (also known as Gorse and Whin) is the plant most associated with The Heath. It is a prickly bush with yellow flowers and it spreads very quickly. If it wasn't cut back it would invade the playground. Furze blooms from February to July. Years ago, the yellow flowers were boiled in water and used as a medicine against jaundice and kidney stones.
