PEACE

When the cease-fire in Northern Ireland broke down in 1996, we had a Peace Week in school. During the week (March 4th - 8th), the children painted this mural in the playground. It symbolises peace between the two communities in Northern Ireland; Republicans who want to be part of the Irish Republic, and Loyalists who want to remain part of England.

During Peace Week also, the class wrote this poem.

PEACE

The Heath School says: We want peace,

Will the hatred ever cease?

UVF, IRA,

You don't have to kill to get your own way.

Bombs in buses, bombs in cars;

People killed or left with scars.

Families mourning, children cry

For the loved ones they've seen die.

A dove is a sign of peace they say.

Wouldn't it be nice if it flew our way?

Through the darkness and the pain

To give us back our peace again.
