11th January

Waste ground in the town centre.

Bright but cool.

The flowering shoots of Coltsfoot are just showing through last year's leaves.

These are the female reproductive components of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha.

I was a bit surprised to see rust on the Spiny Sow Thistle, but I suppose they have to overwinter somewhere. The leaf appears to have fungal mycelium showing through the surface.

I was very surprised, however, to see Cow Parsley in flower. The new season's growth is far from flowering, so this must be an over-wintering survivor from last year. That makes it about 6 months late rather than 3 months early.
