Original Hedgerow, leg 1.
Bright and dry. |
Two shots of another new Cheilosia hoverfly. Looks pretty fresh to me.
One of the most distinctive tails in the hedgerow - an Earwig. These are reported to be scarce this year.
Ground Elder is the latest Umbellifer to flower. I've also seen Hogweed on one or two verges. |
Hawthorn flowers have already died back, leaving the embryonic fruits behind. |
The Hedge Woundwort is a little later this year. It will be interesting to see if its hybrid with Marsh Woundwort is also late.
Navelwort is in full flower, looking for all the world like a tiny green Foxglove. Umbilicus rupestris.
Here's a rare shot. Procumbent Pearlwort - Sagina procumbens - is a tiny plant that makes flat cushions at ground level. This specimen was on a wall, allowing me the unusual side-shot. |
Two shots of Soldier Flies. Different species, I think.
A new moth, and one of the larger micro-moths: Udea olivalis. |
Two Soldier Beetles; Rhagonycha fulva (left) and Cantharis rustica (right).
Two muscids.
Two images showing Dungflies. Scathophagus stercoraria (left) and Lesser Dungflies (right).
Most of the Sawflies I see are green or black. This has a distinctly brown colouration. |
Argyra leucocephala - one of the Thick-headed Flies. |
The seedhead of Herb Bennet, showing the double-bent hooks that enable them to attach themselves to clothes, fur, etc. for dispersal.
Puccinia urticata is a fungal rust affecting Nettles. It causes a substantial increase in growth, thereby increasing the surface area available for its own spore-production. |
