Deforested Heath on a moss hunt, with a bit of a surprise at the end.

Bright with a cold wind.

Two shots of what looks to be Dicranella heteromalla. Cushion about 6 cm. across.

Note the minute beetle on the lower left of the RH image.

These are the immature capsules and setae of Ceratodon purpureus. The leaves of this moss are about 3 mm long.

A small moss with pinkish antheridia.

This is a distant shot of a large (60cm.) cushion of Polytrichum commune. The setae of the sporing capsules are about 8cm tall.

The early leaves of Bilberry start off red.

The moss to the lower left is Polytrichum commune again.

As I was down taking this shot of an unidentified water-walking insect I was hit by pellets from a shot-gun. Local clay-pigeon enthusiasts are obviously unaware that their expended shot is reaching the road.

The insect - whatever it is - appears to have only 4 legs.
