10th March

Verge at sea-level.

Cloudy early, wet later.

When I see the Blackthorn flowers on the verge, I know that the Willow catkins will be out, too. They always emerge virtually simultaneously.

And true to form, about 200m away, there they were.

Time to look for Andrena clarkiella - a solitary mining bee that feeds its young exclusively on Willow pollen.

As soon as the pollen appears, the insects are out and about. No opportunity wasted.

This is an interesting one. The tree is an old (live) Beech, but the plant growing in the hole appears to be Elder. Hole about 2m above road level.
