10th March |
Verge at sea-level.
Cloudy early, wet later. |
When I see the Blackthorn flowers on the verge, I know that the Willow catkins will be out, too. They always emerge virtually simultaneously.
|
And true to form, about 200m away, there they were.
Time to look for Andrena clarkiella - a solitary mining bee that feeds its young exclusively on Willow pollen. |
As soon as the pollen appears, the insects are out and about. No opportunity wasted.
|
This is an interesting one. The tree is an old (live) Beech, but the plant growing in the hole appears to be Elder. Hole about 2m above road level. |
