9th March |
High Heath.
Dull and wet. |
This and the next are two new species of moss for the site. The first is Racomitrium lanuginosum. Patch shown about 8 cm. across.
This shot shows the tiny capsules. The setae are less than 1 cm. long. These capsules are scarce, since the Racomitrium is self-fertile.
|
And this looks like the closely related Racomitrium heterostichum. Patch about 4 cm.across.
The capsules in the left image belong to Ceratodon purpureus. |
This patch of mosses and lichens is on very thin soil over rock. It contains: Racomitrium lanuginosum (centre top), Racomitrium heterostichum (grey, top right), Polytrichum urnigerum (centre, with orange archegonia), Cladonia portentosa (grey 'antlers', lower centre). I'd say that there is also Trapelia coarctata, a lichen, (black dots on the stone at the top edge, left of centre.) Picture about 10 cm. across. |
These are the capsules of Polytrichum juniperum. |
