29th March

Approach to Beltany circle.

Warm and sunny.

Lunularia cruciata is a liverwort easily identified by its crescent-shaped gemmae cups. The close-up shows a few gemmae in the process of being distributed by falling raindrops.

Gemmae cups about 4 mm. across.

Mnium hornum grows all the way along the path above the ditch.

A few flower-heads of Shepherds' Purse were open at the entrance to the pathway.

In the stone circle I found a few Parmelia saxatilis lichens with striking orange patches in the thallus.

My initial reaction to this nestling corpse was that it was a young wood-pigeon, but I've had a good look at the claws and I think they might be embryonic talons, so maybe a very young Sparrowhawk? Breastbone about 10 cm. long.
