River Deele.

Bright and warm.

These Chironomids - non-biting midges - are very numerous near the water. As soon as they land they start waving their front legs in front of them in some kind of semaphore.

The semaphore appears to be working for these two. The male (feathered antennae) is at the rear.

An excellent quiz picture: it's the seed leaves of Red Campion. The tiny fly is one of the Lonchopterids: Pointed-Wing Flies.

The Bluebells are as close to open as they can be without being open.

A mosquito.

On the return journey I spotted what looked like Hawthorn flowers, but they turned out to be large Prunus blossoms instead.

Back at the Hedgerow, leg 2: Equisetum palustre - Marsh Horsetail. The close-up shows the white edges to the teeth.

And lastly for today, the larva of the Drinker Moth - Euthrix potatoria. I only ever find these on dried grass.
