5th May

High Heath.

Bright and hot.

Common Butterwort is about to flower. The close-up shows the sticky glands that catch insects to feed the plant.

Coltsfoot has set seed.

A tiny (5mm.) Chrysomelid beetle on Ribwort Plantain.

A female Cuckoo flew past 'cuckooing' as she went.

A 4 cm. tall Willow. I've watch this for a couple of years and it has just produced flowers for the first time. I'm not exactly sure which species, but I'd suggest a hybrid with Dwarf Willow as one parent and maybe Eared for the other.

Heath Bedstraw - Galium saxatile - has pointed leaves. This is currently in bud.

Lousewort - Pedicularis sylvatica - appears to have been a flower for a week or so.

Polytrichum moss capsules are covered in golden hairs. The covers should split soon, revealing the green capsule.

A very long spider weaving a web on Ribwort Plantain.

A new micromoth. Some micromoths have very varied colour forms and this variation hasn't been seen by any of my micromoth contacts. It will therefore have to be put down as a Tortricid sp.

(That's Sphagnum moss it's on.)

And while I was down taking the micro I spotted a few specimens of Bog Beacon - a scarce fungus - growing through the Bog Pondweed and Sphagnum moss.
