Local garden after a major clear-up operation.

Dry and sunny, then sudden rain.

I managed to get a couple of shots before the skies opened. This is a Tortoise Beetle - Cassida rubiginosa. The thorax is hinged and can be raised (right) or lowered (left) depending on whether the beetle is moving or hiding. Note the feeding signs to the upper right of the leaf.

The Puss Moth larva has changed again, both in shape and colour. It appears to alternate periods of frenzied feeding with long periods of complete inactivity. During the inactive phase it rests directly along the midrib of a leaf. The forked 'tail' is telescopic and is flicked over the back of the larva at the slightest sign of any disturbance, such as movement or shadow. Perhaps this is some sort of anti-ichneumonid protection device.
