Original Hedgerow, leg 2.

Cloudy, dull and wet.

This is the last of the Typha latifolia - Bulrush - in this location. The landowner has been granted planning permission for a domestic dwelling (the test excavations are clearly visible in the foreground of the image). Not only will we lose the bog, but we'll also lose the Typha, the Bulrush Wainscot moth and the hoverfly Anasimyia lineata, which are all locally confined to this location. Given the amount of land that's available around here I cannot see why planning permission should be given for this kind of development. Raphoe also has a severe flooding problem, and I've just calculated that this bog holds 4.5 thousand tons of water, which will now be drained towards the town.

Still, it's good to know what used to be here.
