4th September

Original Hedgerow, leg 2.

Dull with heavy showers.

A batch of Horse Mushrooms - Agaricus arvensis. Note the 'cog' shape of the veil.

A 'Flower Bug' - Anthocoris nemorum.

Judging by the very long antennae and the lack of an ovipositor, I'd call this a male Ichneumonid.

One of the few spiders I can identify. An 'Orb Spider' (named after the circular shape of their webs) - Metellina segmentata.

Brambles are ripe and Raspberries are over, but their new flowers are still appearing.

I closely examine every specimen of the hoverfly Rhingia campestris, especially if they are bright like this one, but I still haven't found Rhingia rostrata. I'm not even sure if they occur in Ireland.

One of the Cicadellidae - Leafhoppers. Evacanthus interruptus.

The pupa (right) and last larval skin (left) of the Thistle Tortoise Beetle - Cassida rubiginosa.

More pictures of the Braconid laying into Nematus pavidus larvae.

I mentioned before that some of the larvae try to escape by hanging under the leaves. This Braconid wasn't going to be put off.......

but suddenly this Vespid flew in and took the pair of them. I looked up after I had taken the approach shot (quite by accident!) and they were gone.

It's a jungle out there.
