The growing tips of this Sphagnum moss are bright red. Spiky green shoots of a Polytrichum moss can be seen growing through.

Two shots of a male Polytrichum formosum. The rounded structures in the centre of the images are the male reproductive parts - the antheridae - and are about 5mm across.

It looks as if the used antheridae can be re-used for making new shoots. I hadn't seen this behaviour before. |
