5th April

High plantation, between rain showers.

More Swallows seen, so perhaps yesterday's ones were staying, rather than refuelling at the river.

Wet with bright intervals.

A very common mushroom - Sulphur Tuft - Hypholoma fasciculare. I suppose I see it all year round. Caps about 2 cm. across.

Cardamine pratensis goes by several common names - Milk Maids, Cuckoo Flower, Lady's Smock, etc. It is crucial in this area, since it is the sole foodplant of the Orange Tip butterfly. Now that the food is here, the butterfly should be following rather shortly. Look out for the tiny orange egg that is laid just behind the flower, on the stalk.
