| Bangor Erris is a friendly West Coast village with adequate shopping facilities and lively pubs,
where there is traditional music and dancing on the weekends. If you are interested in discovering the
local way of life, why not try your hand at Boxty making, (1 mile), or spend a day at the Visitiors Farm,
(5 miles). If you're feeling active, watersports such as sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and swimming as well as horseriding are available at Elly Bay, Belmullet. Erris has 62 miles of Freshwater Fishing where Salmon and Sea Trout are available to the experienced Angler. A further 50 miles of Brown Trout only streams are available to fish. The Bangor Angling Club can arrange fishing on parts of the Owenmore and Owenduff Rivers from Febuary to September and fishing on the Glenamoy from May to September as well as Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout fishing on scenic Carramore Lake from January to September. Boats are available to hire and day tickets are easily purchased. Deep Sea fishing is available off Blacksod Bay. (If you don't feel like catching your supper personally, Eagle Isle Wild Smoked Mayo Salmon can be purchased from Eagle Isle Seafood LTD., near Belmullet.) Dermott Gilleece, in the 'Irish Times' referred to Carne Golf Course as "Quite simply the most stunning discovery I have made in golf." Carne 18 hole golf course, in its remote and wild location, with a great ocean, deep valleys and unrestricted panoramas in every direction could prove to be the ultimate golf links experience. (Par 72, length 6119m, bar and restaurant on site.) Feel like going further a field? Why not take a day trip on the "Ave Maria" with Inniskea Island Tours to the mystical islands off the west coast of the Mullet Peninsular. The Inniskea islands are rich in amazing scenic beauty, rare wild life and numerous Archaeological sites. Other places of breathtaking scenic beauty within driving distance are Ballycroy National Park, Shraigh Beech, Blacksod Bay and Doohomir Head. Mayo is renowned for producing high quality woollens. The factory Shop in Ballina is an outlet for Flannery's hand loomed and hand knit garments as well as local craft works. There is also the Foxford Woollen Mills Tour, giving you a chance to experience life in Foxford since the middle of the 19th. Century and watch skilled craftspeople produce world famous Foxford tweeds, rugs and blankets. A few miles outside Mulrany there is a sign for Carrigahowley Castle. This was once the home of Grainuail, the famous sea pirate. It has been renovated and visitors can get the key from the house just beside it. (People familiar with the legend might know this castle as Rockfleet.) Achill Island boasts many fine drives with winding roads and cliff edge descents for the careful driver. At Keel look out for the Dolphins and Basking Sharks playing together at the playing together at the beach side. Slightly further away, but well worth the visit is Croagh Patrick, Irelands Holy mountain, where St Patrick is reputed to have banished the snakes from Ireland. At the foot of Croagh Patrick, you will find the National Famine Monument, commemorating all those who died during the Great Famine 1845 - 1847.(The drive takes about one and a quarter hours.)
