Youth Support WorkersThe aim of our work is to befriend the young person and build good working relationships. We offer a support service specifically tailored to individual needs on a one-to-one basis through direct referral from the social work department in HSE Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan area. The service caters to young people ages 8 - 18 inclusive. On referral, the Youth Support Worker meets with the individuals social worker and team leader to develop a support plan. Following the referral the social worker and Youth Support Worker will meet with the young person and their family/parent or guardian to discuss the young persons needs and identify their areas of interest. In partnership with the young person the Youth Support Worker will agree to meet on a regular basis which can include: •Linking in to existing services within the community (e.g. Youth Centres, GAA and soccer clubs, afterschool programmes, arts and drama groups, scouts, training centres etc.) •Activity based programmes such as swimming, football, pitch & putt, go-karting, pottery, painting, cinema, bowling, special interests. •Linking in with existing services within the HYLS e.g. residential weekends, summer programmes, schools and training centres. Through the ongoing work relationships are built and emotional and behavioural issues can be addressed in a safe and supportive environment thus enabling the young person to make positive life choices. The young persons participation in the programme is reviewed on a regular basis. When the indentified objectives of the work are met an agreement is reached between the young person, the support worker, social worker and parent to begin the completion process. There are four Youth Support Workers in the HYLS - two in Sligo, one in Tubbercurry and one in South Leitrim.
