TUG-OF-WAR INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION

As Tug-of-War vanished from the Olympic programme, the opportunity for international competition disappeared.  However with National Associations formed the desire for International competitions developed.  An organisation called "Tug of War International Federation"(TWIF) was formed with the view to organising World and European Championships.
Since the first European Championships held in London in 1955 European Championships were staged regularly until 1974 when the affiliation of countries from outside resulted in the first World Championships in 1975.

World Championships have been held every second year with European Championships being held in the intervening years.  The formation of
TWIF has been extremely beneficial to the development of international Tug of War.

THE IRISH ASSOCIATION.

The Irish Tug-of-War Association was founded in 1967 and runs the sport in this country.  Its Chairman is Phil Timoney from Donegal.  Each province has its own board to run and promote tug-of-war in its province.  The number of teams in the country is growing each year.  This country has produced some of the finest teams in the world winning several World and European titles.  The famous Boyle team from Wexford have brought the sport up to a very high standard for the rest of the country.  The Irish Association can feel proud of its achievements in the sport since its formation over twenty years ago.
