[WICKLOW LEPRACHAUN] [WICKLOW VIKING]

The Above Characters are NATIVE to WICKLOW but I am NOT.

The Lenehan's to which I belong have origins in County Cork in the Newmarket area.
The name Lenehan in Irish is O'Líneachaun and is most prominent in Cork and Roscommon although there are Lenehan's sprinkled throughout Ireland.
The Name originated in Roscommon. The Chronicles record it as early as the 12th Century.
It is not a very common name. I have found there are many variations of the spelling of Lenehan and have concluded that they are all probably from the same Irish Name.
The accent (fada) over the "i" gives it more of an "e" sound in Irish.
I suspect that Lenehan's who emigrated in the 1800's and early 1900's for the most part were illiterate and the "spelling" was left to whatever clerk filled in the form.
The same circumstance probably prevailed when the name was anglicised.

Probable Variations
Lenihan Lanahan Lenahan Leneghan Lenehen Linehan

You can stick an O' in front of any of these.

Possible Relations
Lanighan Lannighan

There are perhaps a few more.

I am hoping to find a picture of the family crest and add it to this page. The family motto is "Patriae Infelici Fidelis" which translates as 'Faithful to my Unhappy Country'.
My Brother Tom sent me this Coat of Arms from the Web. It is close but not 100% accurate per the written description of the Crest and Coat of Arms that I got from another source.

Lenehan Coat of Arms Crest (not shown) "A Buck trippant gules attired or, holding in the mouth a trefoil slipped vert and resting the forefoot on an escutcheen of the Burke Arms".
COAT OF ARMS is "Argent on a mount vert a buck trippant gules attired or in the mouth a trefoil slipped of the second a chief azure charged with a castle having on each tower an obtuse spire surmounted by a weathercock" (not shown) "and on an arch over the curtain wall a cross flory all of the field" (All not shown). The Spelling of the name in Irish is slightly different from the one I got from the Geneology Office in Dublin.

This is the bit of the family background I've been able to put together.
