Ciaran's Well and the High Crosses are roughly
5 km from the town in the direction of Oldcastle. St Ciaran (fl. C8
and perhaps biographer of St. Patrick) founded a monastery on the site.
The Crosses were apparently markers for the boundary of the site. Nowadays
there is a festival on the first Sunday in August to celebrate the curative
power of the water from Ciaran's Well. Though the festival is much reduced
in the amount of ballyhoo surrounding it, nonetheless
people may still be seen taking the water on this day.The waters are
believed to be most efficacious at
that time. Differnt areas of the well have different curative
powers. Drinking the water, as above, is said to heal ailments of the
throat. Lower down the stream, the water is said to cure problems with
the feet and ankles. Elsewhere there is a stream for healing backs.
The Festival sideshows and other events but those are mercifully absent
nowadays.Whether it works or not ? Seems to, by times.
