Bennettsbridge |
Bennettsbridge can be found on one of the
most delightful stretches of the River Nore. The original name was St.
Benet's Bridgeand it was of vital importance in the history of transport
right up to the establishment of the railways systems. It is small
village nesting beside the River Nore, only four miles south of Kilkenny
City. Its beautiful 14th century bridge and riverside
position are not its only charms, as it has become one of Ireland's most
famous craft villages and now boast recreational facilities that use the
river and its surrounding scenery to perfection. By and standard, it is
an intriguing little village.
The bridge, the weir and the two
beautiful old mills downstream from the bridge present a scene typical
of earlier days, when the rich farming area boasted dozens of such
mills. The smaller mill is still producing wholemeal, stoneground flour,
and is one of the few in Ireland still making this type of flour. The
other "Big" mill is the home of Nicholas Mosse Pottery. Ducks and swans and other
river life are present in the abundance. |
