JOAN OF ARC   Born 1412

Long before Buffy, Jeanne D'Arc was a true teenage super heroine. She was about 12 when heavenly voices first told her to drive the English from her beloved France, and 17 or so when she led 4,000 French troops to a miraculous victory at Orleans. But even though this fearless peasant girl put him on the throne, Charles VII proved to be a royal ingrate, failing to protest when she was captured and tried for heresy. Burned at the stake before her 20th birthday, Joan would eventually be elevated to sainthood. En route, she inspired countless bad statues -- and irresistible roles for any actress who looks good in a pixie cut and chain mail.
