Cork Senior Finals [Back to Home Page]
The Cork Senior Hurling and Football Finals date back to 1888. From 1888 to 1922 the team that won the championship in either code went on to represent Cork in the All-Ireland series. In the past in football, typically a club would have to win the Intermediate Football championship to move up to Senior, but there have been occasions where a club has moved up without winning the Intermediate but this is rare. From 1939-1964 teams that won the Junior County went straight to Senior as there weren't enough clubs to justify having an Intermediate grade. Nemo Rangers currently hold the record number of title wins with 15. Relegation was introduced to the championship in 2006 with St.Michaels and Mallow having the dubious honour of being the first teams to be relegated from Senior.
In hurling the same ideas apply but the titles would not have been spread out as much between clubs, and there have been a large proportion of titles going to city clubs. Blackrock have 30 titles with St.Finbarrs and Glen Rovers next in line. There is less of a split these days as hurling in the city has declined as rural clubs are getting stronger. Midleton, Sarsfields, Erins Own and Newtownshandrum to name but a few have challenged the city dominance in recent years. In years past Intermediate winners would move to Senior, but in 2004 this grade was split into Intermediate and Premier Intermediate, with the winners of the latter moving to Senior. In 2006 relegation was introduced for the first time from the Senior Grade and Delaneys became the first team to be relegated from Senior.
